Tenant details

This is the person who paid the rent, usually you.

This tool provides a document format for genuine rent payments. You are responsible for entering accurate information, maintaining supporting records, and obtaining signatures or documents required by your employer, tax adviser, or applicable law. How to use the rent receipt generator

The generator works as a simple six-step form. Every step asks for one small set of details, so it stays comfortable on a mobile screen.

  1. Enter the tenant name, and the tenant address if you want it printed.
  2. Enter the landlord name, address and PAN. PAN is optional in this tool.
  3. Add the full address of the rented premises.
  4. Enter the monthly rent, pick a period of one, three, six or twelve months, or set a custom duration up to thirty-six months, then choose the start month and payment mode.
  5. Add an optional receipt prefix, signatory name and place of issue.
  6. Review the live summary and download the PDF. Each month is printed on its own A4 page.

What details are needed in a rent receipt?

A rent receipt is a written acknowledgement from the landlord that rent was received. Employers commonly look for the following details, though the exact list can vary by organisation:

  • Name of the tenant who paid the rent
  • Name of the landlord who received the rent
  • Address of the rented premises
  • Rent amount in figures and in words
  • The month or period the rent relates to
  • Date of payment and the payment mode
  • Landlord PAN, where your employer or adviser asks for it
  • Signature of the landlord or the authorised signatory

Please confirm the exact requirement with your employer or tax adviser before you submit anything.

Can I generate receipts for 12 months?

Yes. Select twelve months and the tool builds a single PDF with twelve A4 pages, one receipt per month, each with its own receipt number. If your tenancy does not fit a ready option, choose the custom duration and type any number of months from one to thirty-six. You can also edit the rent amount or the payment date of an individual month, which is useful when the rent changed mid-year or a payment was made late.

Important HRA rent receipt checklist

  • Generate receipts only for rent you have actually paid.
  • Keep bank statements, UPI records or cheque details as supporting proof.
  • Check that names, the property address and the period are spelt correctly.
  • Get the landlord to sign the printed receipts where your employer asks for a signature.
  • Ask your employer whether a revenue stamp is needed for cash payments above a certain amount.
  • Confirm the current PAN and declaration requirements with your employer or tax adviser.
  • Store a copy of the downloaded PDF safely, because this website keeps no copy for you.

Privacy and data security

This tool runs completely inside your browser. The details you type are held in browser memory only for as long as the page is open, and they are used solely to draw the PDF on your own device. Nothing is submitted to our server, written to a database, emailed, logged, or shared with any third party. Closing or refreshing the page clears everything. The only item we may remember is your chosen colour theme, which is a display preference and holds no personal information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to submit rent receipts if I transfer rent online via UPI or NEFT?

Yes. Even if you pay rent electronically via UPI, NEFT, or IMPS, employers may require formal rent receipts to process the House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption. Your online transaction history, such as a bank statement, serves as supporting proof that the payment was made, while the rent receipt acts as formal acknowledgment of the transaction.

Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?

Yes, you can claim HRA by paying rent to your parents, provided the property is owned by them. You should actually transfer the rent amount to their bank account and maintain valid rent receipts. The rental income received by your parents will generally be included in their taxable income, subject to applicable tax rules. You cannot claim HRA by paying rent to your spouse.

Is a revenue stamp mandatory on rent receipts?

A ₹1 revenue stamp is generally required only where rent is paid in cash and the receipt amount exceeds ₹5,000, subject to applicable stamp-law requirements. The landlord should sign across the affixed stamp. For electronic payments such as UPI, cheque, RTGS, or NEFT, a revenue stamp is generally not required.

What happens if my landlord refuses to share their PAN card?

Under Indian income-tax rules, if your annual rent payments exceed ₹1,00,000, you generally need to report your landlord's PAN to your employer for HRA exemption purposes. If the landlord does not provide their PAN, your employer may not be able to process the full HRA exemption, which can result in higher TDS deductions. You may still be able to claim the eligible exemption while filing your Income Tax Return, subject to the applicable rules and supporting documents.
